Cruse Bereavement Care

Main aims and activities

Cruse Bereavement Care help those bereaved by providing carefully chosen and well-trained bereavement volunteers to whom they can talk to on a 1:1 basis in complete confidence. There is additional training for our volunteers working in the Children and Young People’s Team.

We promote the well-being of bereaved people and enable anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. Services are free to bereaved people.

We provide a variety of support activities including, one to one support, a local Telephone Helpline (01223 633536) which is manned every Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm, Coffee Drop in Centres in Cambridge, Ely and a specialist group to support people who have been bereaved by suicide.

Services and prices

Our children’s team provide support for bereaved children between the ages of 4 and 18 and their parents and/or the adults responsible for them including teachers. Volunteers can work in schools with groups of staff and/or children.

We offer training and talks for organisations such as schools and youth groups wanting a greater understanding of death, grief and loss, as part of the PSHE curriculum.

One to one support is also offered to children, parents and professionals and individuals, normally about 6 sessions according to need. These may take place in the child's home, school or any other convenient and appropriate place.

All volunteers working with children and young people have undergone specialist training and have had enhanced CRB checks.

The national Cruse website offers much information and good links.  There is a separate national young people’s website “Hope Again” designed by young people for young people living after loss

We also send out a range of information booklets on different types of bereavement.
